54,000 killed, 2 lakh injured in 20-yr

JHENIDAH: Around 54,000 people were killed and some 200,000 others injured in 1.16 lakh road accident across the country in last 20 years.

Some 307 people died and 200 others sustained injuries in 488 road mishaps countrywide between January and February this year.

The data was revealed at a 2-day workshop on ensuring road security and reducing road accident at the conference room of the district’s deputy commissioner (DC) on Saturday.

Speakers at the workshop also claimed that ignorance, irresponsible mentality and unconsciousness of pedestrian, passengers, and the derivers cause 90 percent of total road accident.

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) organized the workshop while DC M Shafiqul Islam inaugurated the function.

Presided over by additional DC Sheikh Rafiqul Islam, district superintendent of police (SP) Altaf Hossain, BRTA’s Khulna divisional deputy-director AMM Masudul Alam, BRTA district assistant director Selim Box and district traffic interposer Salauddin also spoke.

Over 100 bus and truck drivers took part at the workshop.
