Extremist killed in Satkhira ‘gunfight’

SATKHIRA: A suspected extremist was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Magura area of Tala upazila of the district early Tuesday.

Two policemen also sustained injuries during the gun battle. 

The deceased was identified as Gaffar Pahar, 40, the commander of Purba Bangla Communist Party (ML Jonojuddha).

Tala Thana Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Abu Bakar said, “Acting on a tip off, police went to the area around 2:00am. Sensing police presence, the extremists opened fire aiming police and police retaliated with gunshots triggering the gunfight, leaving the extremist leader and his cohort Saiful critically injured.”

Police fired 10 rounds of bullets while the extremist cadres also hurled 10/15 rounds of bullets, OC added.

The injured were rushed to Tala Health Complex where duty doctor declared Gaffar dead and Saiful Islam was shifted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.

Police also seized a pipe gun, four round bullets, a dagger, and a lethal weapon from the spot.
