‘RAB can’t be disbanded suddenly’

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said it is not possible to disband country’s elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) suddenly as it has become an institution. 

“BNP is now demanding to disband RAB, though they formed and didn’t raise voice during operation clean heart. Now RAB is doing well in maintaining law-and-order,” she said. 

The premier, also ruling Awami League president, came up with the assertion while addressing a press conference over her recent visit to Japan at Gano Bhaban in the capital in the afternoon.

In response to query on interim election as recent January 5 polls was not inclusive, she said there is no chance to raise question over the election as there were law enforcers deployed in each and every polling centers countrywide.  

The Awami League chief said BNP got rotten after it stayed away from January 5 polls and BNP is being kept alive with the help of ‘formalin’.

In the press briefing, Sheikh Hasina underscored the friendly relations between Japan and Bangladesh. She also stated the progressive initiatives of Japan to us.

She also termed the visit successful and conveyed the condolence of Japan government to Bangladesh.

Sheikh Hasina further said Japan promised to provide some six-billion dollars for the development of the country where the total aid was only around 11.20 billion dollars earlier.

She also met with the Emperor of Japan Akihito and Prime Minister of the country Shinzo during her visit and fixed many bilateral deeds.

Hasina invited the leaders to visit Bangladesh and they hoped to do so.

Japan also showed interests in many development projects in Bangladesh, she added.

Hasina further said Japan is likely to help in 1300-Megawatt electricity power plant in Bangladesh. Moreover, Rail Bridge, roads’ development and other projects will be fruitful with the help of Japan, she added.

She also said, “We are working for peace rather war.” Answering other queries of journalists she criticized the activities of BNP-Jamaat.

She hoped that the initiatives of the government will be welcomed by the mass.

Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam and Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury were among others present at the press conference.
