Probe about to finalize

DHAKA: The investigation of sensational case of abduction and murder of seven people, including city councilor Nazrul Islam in Narayanganj, is to be settled down shortly.

The investigation team members and deputy secretary of law ministry Mizanur Rahman Khan came up with the disclosure on Monday.

Earlier on the day, the team submitted the progress report of the investigation to the office of Attorney General.

Mizanur Rahman Khan said the investigation is at the final stage. “We received the statements of 329 witnesses in this regard and the rest of the process will be finalized within four weeks,” he said.

Deputy Attorney General ASM Nazmul Haque told journalists that three reports were submitted so far two from police and RAB chief and another from public administration ministry.

He further said, earlier on May 15, the High Court ordered to four investigation teams to submit their reports within June 4.

Three reports have already been submitted, he added.

According to him, the investigation report from CID is still left to be submitted.

On May 14, the High Court also asked for investigation reports from Police, RAB, CID and public administration ministry.

On the other hand, a Narayanganj court on Monday placed former RAB officer Lt Commander MM Rana on a fresh five-day remand in the sensational seven-murder case.

Senior Judicial Magistrate KM Mahiuddin passed the order when Detective Branch of Police Inspector Mamunur Rashid Mondal, also investigation officer of the case, produced him before his court on expiration of his second-phase eight-day remand.

On May 7, an administrative investigation team was formed as par the order of the court. The deputy secretaries of the ministry and high officials are supervising the investigation process.

Earlier, Narayanganj City Corporation ward councillor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker along with five others were abducted on April 27. Their bodies were recovered from the Shitalakkhya River after three days.

Police held some 24 persons and seized a micro bus in this connection.

However, the prime accused of the case Nur Hossain has been fugitive since bodies of seven people including Councillor Nazrul Islam were recovered from the Sitalakhyya River.

Nur Hossain was also vice president of AL's Siddhirganj Thana unit. He was expelled from the party after he was accused in the murder case.
