4 commissions to reform finance sector

DHAKA: Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), independent think-tank on the development process of Bangladesh, South Asia and LDCs, proposed to build four commissions to reform the Finance Sector of the country.

The proposed commissions are Agricultural Value Commission, Independent Statistics Committee, Local Government Finance Commission and Government Expenditure Commission.

CPD made the proposal in a press conference on post-budget briefing at BRAC Centre Inn of the capital on Friday.

CPD distinguished fellow Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya said political stability is a must for the implementation of budget. Besides, financial sector’s reformation is also needed.

He also said, “The economy became slower in the second half of FY 2012-13 as the government failed to show their endeavour. They also failed to take any step to end the money smuggling.”

“The method of revenue collection is logical but it is not enough to achieve 7.3 percent growth,” he added.

He also said allocation for children, agriculture and other social sectors shrank as Padma Multipurpose Bridge got more allocation.

CPD executive director Dr Mustafizur Rahman, research director Dr Fahmida Akhter Khatun, additional research director Dr Khandaker Golam Moazzem and research fellow Taufiqul Islam Khan, dialogue and communication director Anisatul Fatema Yousuf among others were present at the briefing.
