Social worker Rokeya Begum passes away

DHAKA: Noted social worker Rokeya Begum passed away on Friday due to cancer- related complications in a city hospital. She was 74. 

She was the mother of former Joint Secretary of Jatiya Press Club Shaikat Rushdee, also expatriate journalist, political analyst, broadcaster, reciter and leading community worker in Britain Perry Ferdous, now living in Canada. 

Mrs. Begum left behind her husband A. K. M. Monirul Haque, one son, three daughters, two sisters, a brother and a host of relatives, friends and well-wishers. She has been involved with social works, including voluntary service, in Banani and Meherpur.

Mrs. Begum, daughter of late Wajed Ali Biswas, was born in Chuadanga in 1939. She had her schooling in Kolkata and Chuadanga.

She was buried at Banani Graveyard on Friday afternoon following her Namaz-e-Janaza at the Banani Jame Mosque. Her Janaza and burial were attended by Professor Farhad Hossain MP of Meherpur-1, Professor Dr. Sadik R. Malik, educationists, editors, journalists, social workers and distinguished persons.

QULKHWANI ON MONDAY

The qulkhwani and doa mahfil for late Rokeya Begum will be held on Monday (9 June 2014) after Maghrib prayer at her Banani residence. Her relatives, friends and well-wishers are requested to attend the program and pray for the salvation of the departed soul.
