DHAKA: Law enforcers Friday handed over the bodies of four Bangladeshis who were amongst killed by traffickers on a Malaysia-bound trawler in the Bay of Bengal near the St Martin’s Island.

They were identified as Selim, 19, Saiful, 40, Rubel, 35, and Monir, 30.

Confirming the matter to banglanews, Cox’s Bazar Additional Superintend of Police (ASP) Tofail Ahmed said that police handed over the bodies by noon 12:00pm.

Among them two were from Jessore while each of others from Bogra and Sirajganj, he added. Relatives of those deceased received the bodies.

However, ASP told media that as the identity of another is yet to know, so police couldn’t hand over his body. “In that case police will bury him.”

Earlier, at least six people were killed and 140 others injured, of them 27 hit by bullets, when armed traffickers fired on that trawler.

Later, the passengers caught four traffickers, including Myanmar and Thailand nationals, while the rest managed to flee on boats, said Commander AKM Maruf Hassan, intelligence officer of the Bangladesh Coast Guard.

Members of the Coast Guard recovered five dead bodies while they suspect the body of another illegal migrant was washed away after he had received bullets and fallen into the sea.

A total of 318 Bangladeshis, two Thai nationals and one from Myanmar were in the Malaysia-bound trawler, coast guard sources said.

31 of the injured are now in under treatment in different local hospitals there.
