CHITTAGONG: The heavy downpour submerged most of the parts of the port city in knee-deep to waist-deep water causing immense misery for dwellers on Friday.
Many roads and houses went under knee-deep water due to excessive rainfall, resulting immense sufferings to the people living in those areas.
Stagnant rain water accumulated in different parts of the city as Oxygen, Hamjar Bagh, Muradpur, Aturar Depot, Bahaddarhat, Shulakbahar, Katalganj, Nasirabad, Baizid, 2 no. Gate, Sholoshohor, Chalkbazaar, Panchlaish, DC Road, Khaja Road, Chandgaon, Mohra, Bakalia, Chaktai, Rajakhali, Dewanbazaar, Doublemouring, Agrabad, Chhotopool, Boropool, CDA, Halishahar, Pahartoli, Sharaipara, Shagorika and lower parts of Patenga.
Many vehicles were seen out of order due to excessive rain water on the road. Office-goers and day labourers faced problems going to their work places as filthy water remained stagnant on many roads and there was a shortage of public transport.
Port sources said that the loading and uploading of containers loaded with food products remain halted due to the heavy rain.
Patenga Weather Office Forecast Officer Bishwajeet Choudhury said 326.2 millimeters of rainfall were recorded from 9:00am to 9:00pm Friday. The heavy rainfall may continue due to monsoon, he added.
Bureau of Meteorology warned the areas adjacent to North Bay of Bengal and predicted further downfall. A windy weather may visit for a while in the coastal areas, the bureau added.
Maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal three.
All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice.
