Governance Advocacy Forum kicks off cross-country campaign

DHAKA: A coalition of good-governance campaigners Monday launched a cross-country campaign to make people aware and motivate the government in taking decision for decentralizing the administration.

Leaders of the Governance Advocacy Forum at a press conference held at the National Press Club said the six-day campaign would be carried out in 37 districts of six divisions.

Democratic Decentralization National Convention 2010 will be held in Dhaka in September based on the recommendations collated from the programmes in 37 districts.

Governance Advocacy, a coalition of 33 organizations, is campaigning to press home their 19-point demand, including formulation of National Democratic Decentralization Policy.

Forum coordinator Mohsin Ali read out a written announcement. Justice Golam Rabbani was present at the programme as chief guest while professor ASM Atiqur Rahman of Social Welfare Department of DU as special guest.

Mohsin Ali said, “The government has curtailed the power of local public representatives through issuing circulars on different occasions.”

He added: the government has not taken any initiative yet to pacify the conflict of power between the MPs and UP Chairmen. For this reasons, the upazila council could not be effective.
