HC for protecting rights of domestic help

DHAKA: The High Court on Tuesday issued a rule upon the government to explain within four weeks why a law should not be enacted for protecting rights of the domestic help.

An HC bench comprising Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Juctice M Habibul Gani issued the rule after the hearing on a writ filed in public interest.

The HC, in the rules, also asked to know that why order should not be given to take necessary steps on the matter.

Secretaries of the Cabinet Division, the Prime Minster’s Office, and the ministries of the Law, the Labor and the Women and Children Affairs were made respondents to the rule.

Advocate Monjil Morshed filed the writ on behalf of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.

He said, “We have hared about a draft policy on the domestic helps’ rights protection, which the authorities concerned could not provide us, and the draft is no longer effective.”

“So, the writ asked for necessary steps to enact a law on the matter,” he added.
