DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to fly for the UK on Monday on a three-day visit to attend the first Girl Summit.
The summit aims to mobilize domestic and international efforts to end female genital mutilation (FGM) and child, early and forced marriage (CEFM) within a generation.
Following the invitation of British Premier David Cameron, the Bangladesh PM will attend the summit in London scheduled for July 22.
According to the sources, Hasina’s attendance to the summit is considered important to the United Kingdom and other international communities as the Bangladesh incumbent government’s efforts to woman empowerment are clear to them.
The visiting team led by PM will leave Dhaka at 10:00am Monday. The team includes foreign minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, state minister for women and children affairs Meher Afroze Chumki and other government officials.
During the tour, Sheikh Hasina will meet British PM David Cameron on Tuesday.
They are expected to discuss on the development of the bilateral relations.
The Bangladesh premier will also attend an iftar mahfil to be organized by UK Awami League on the day.
UK Awami League general secretary Syed Faruq confirmed their preparation to banglanews.
However, Bangladesh’s opposition BNP-Jamaat group has planned to show demonstration against Sheikh Hasina’s visit.
BNP’s international affairs secretary Mahidur Rahman at a press conference held in London’s Frontline Club on Friday told media Britain, a model of democracy, cannot receive a government which came to power through a ‘voter-less election’.
He also blamed the incumbent government for recent killings, forced hiding and suppression on opposition activists.
If police give them permission to arrange demonstration they will do this, the BNP leader added.
