Road crashes kill 3,770 in 6-month

DHAKA: A total of 3,770 people were killed while 10,278 others were injured and 923 disabled physically for life across the country in the last six months.

Those people were victims of 3,356 road accidents during the period of January to June 2014.

Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity on Saturday revealed the data in a press briefing at National Press Club of the city.

According to government calculations, some 1,000 cases were filed across the country within the time regarding road accidents that killed 1,020, injured 689 and disabled 47 people.

Statistics shows that 849 motorcycles, 812 buses, 1,022 trucks and covered vans, 514 auto rickshaws, 513 human haulers (locally known as Nasiman, Kariman etc), 342 city human haulers named Laguna, 315 battery-run rickshaws and 135 cars-jeeps-microbuses fall prey to accidents.

The data also included that among the victims there were 1,159 women, 698 children, 361 students, 148 law enforcers, 108 political leaders and activists, 77 government officials, 70 teachers, 26 journalists, 17 lawyers and 17 engineers.

Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity Secretary General Mozammel Haque Chowdhury said the accidents took place mainly due to overtaking, careless driving, driving by helpers and lack of footpaths.

He also urged for publicity to raise mass awareness.

Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity secretary general also proposed to remove roadside bazaars, to set up signs beside roads and highways and to train drivers and helpers to get rid of mass road mishaps.
