DHAKA: Bangladesh will uphold its position and steps regarding the rights, security and welfare of girls in the upcoming Girls Summit in London.

Foreign minister Abul Hasan Mahmood Ali told media while briefing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s upcoming UK visit to attend Girls’ Summit at a press conference at foreign ministry on Sunday noon.

The foreign minister said for the first time the summit will discuss on the rights of girls. Bangladesh Premier will uphold some specific commitments to girls’ rights on behalf of the country.

At the summit, the PM will mostly talk about the tendency of early marriage for girls.

‘She will also explain the situation of Bangladesh regarding early marriage following UN and national reports,’ Mahmood Ali said.

According to the foreign minister, relations between Bangladesh and Britain are multifaceted. Bangladesh PM will attend a bilateral meeting with UK premier David Cameron.

She will also meet UK’s international development minister, foreign minister and other high officials.

To a question to the incumbent government’s weakness on January 5 general election in Bangladesh, the foreign minister said that the UK premier congratulated to Bangladesh PM after her winning in elections and invited her to visit his country.

This proves that UK government is interested to work with Bangladesh government formed after January 5 elections, the foreign minister added.
