2 killed in stampede during Zakat collection

BARISAL: Two women were killed and five others injured in a stampede while collecting zakat cloths in Kathpatti area of the city on Friday morning.

The incident took place at 10:45am on the day.

The deceased were identified as Firoza, 50, wife of Fozle Ali of Kornakati area of Sarad upazila, and Nupur, 35, wife of Mohon of Rosulpur area of Sadar upazila.

Witness Bilkis said, “An organization was distributing zakat cloths among the destitute of the area at the morning; at one stage, overcrowded people began pushing each others that left seven people seriously injured in stampede.”

They were rushed to Barisal Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctor declared Firoza and Nupur dead.
