EC rejects separate ID for elders

DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) has rejected the proposal of social welfare ministry for separate national identity cards for elderly citizens.

Election Commissioner M Shahnewaz made the disclosure in a formal meeting on Monday.

He said the proposal of separate ID cards would hamper the ongoing process of providing national ID cards across the country. So, no separate ID card will be issued.

If the ministry wishes to provide this sort of card we will help them in this regard, he added.

According to the government law, the people aged 60 years or above are considered as elderly citizens.

A statistics show that around seven percent of the total population of the country is elder.

Another Election Commissioner Abu Hafiz said a special smart card is being processed for the elderly citizens of the country.
