Road crashes kill 5,162 per year

DHAKA: Road accidents across the country kill at least 5,162 people every year while 3,137 of them die on the spot and rest others die on the way or at hospital.

The result was found in a presentation of a research titled “Road Security: Practical View and Obstacles” organized by BRAC and Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC) at city’s Karwan Bazar on Wednesday.

Executive Chairman of PPRC, also advisor of former caretaker government Zillur Rahman presented the keynote in the programme.

The statement said that 95 percent of total accidents held within 57 Kilometers of accident-prone areas are Comilla, Chittagong, Tangail, Sirajganj and Dhaka.

While delivering speech as chief guest, Communications Minister Obaidul Quader said, “We spotted some danger spot and would take necessary steps to prevent accident”.

Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam, Founder Chairman of Nirpad Sharak Chai Ilias Kanchan and FBCCI director Abdul Haque, among others were present in the programme.
