Removal of 8 BIWTA officials sought

DHAKA: A legal notice has been sent seeking removal of eight members of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) blaming them for Pinak-6 launch capsize and failure in its rescue operation.

Lawyer Mohammad Enamul Haque Mollah, on behalf of Ashish Kumar Dey, convener of the national prevention committee of roads, rail and waterways and Tushar Rehman general secretary of citizen rights movement, sent the legal notice through a registry post mail on Wednesday.

The defenders include shipping ministry secretary, director general of shipping department, traffic inspector (Mawa-Kawrakandi river route), inspector (Mawa- Kawrakandi river route), engineer and ship surveyor (Mawa region), BIWTA Mawa river-port official, director (port department), director (waterways safety and traffic division), director (waterways conservation and direction department) and BIWTA chairman.

The notice sought their removal and punishment, excluding shipping ministry secretary and director general of shipping department.

The notice said the passenger ferry, Pinak-6, was carrying more than 200 passengers capsized on August 4 near Mawa Ghat in Lauhajang upazila of Munshiganj district.

According to the government statement, the rescue team had recovered 46 dead bodies and 61 people still missing.

The defenders were accused of negligence in their duty.

The notice also said the plaintiff will file a writ petition if the removal will not be carried out within 72 hours after getting the notice.
