Heavy rain causes traffic jam in city

DHAKA: The city dwellers were witnessing huge traffic congestion due to heavy rainfall that submerged most of the city streets from Saturday morning.

Most of the roads including Malibagh, Mouchak, Shantinagar, Magbazar were seen jam-packed with hundreds vehicles as roads went under water for heavy rainfall from yesterday exposing the capital's poor drainage system.

The waterlogging caused immense sufferings to office-goers and students in the morning.

Besides, accidents took place as drivers and passersby could not understand the ditch as rain water submerged the roads.

Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) built only 278 Kilometer drainage line and can support only 10 millimeters rain in an hour which is not sufficient to drain heavy rain water.

Institute of Diploma Engineers Bangladesh (IDB) study and research cell member and drainage specialist Engineer Habib Ullah said that the drainage system of the capital almost collapsed.
