GOALANDA: Lower parts of Debgram and Daulatdia unions were inundated in last one week as the water level of Padma River has increased to excessive manner so that there is no specific indicator to measure the extent of damage of thousands of villagers.
The panic gripped among villagers as river erosion caused huge loss of property and croplands and become homeless moreover hundreds of families.
The mostly affected areas are Char Bethuri, Antar Mor, Charbarat, Tengrapara villages under Debgram union and Nahar Mandal Para, Ishail Shibrampur, Kiam Uddin Mandalpar villages under Daulatdia union.
Rivers in Bangladesh are geographically highly dynamic. The main rivers are braided, and form islands or chars between the braiding channels. These chars, of which many are inhabited, "move with the flow" and are extremely sensitive to changes in the river conditions.
Erosion processes are highly unpredictable, and not compensated by accretion. These processes also have dramatic consequences in the lives of people living in those areas.
Victims said that the water level of the river has risen up excessively on the other hand heavy current and waves are destroying the banks of the river everyday.
Many lands and houses have already gone under water which caused immense sufferings for the residents of the hazardous areas.
Union Parishad (UP) Chairman of Debgram M Atar Ali Sardar said that several villages were vanished under water. Moreover, three primary schools and a mosque is facing threat for this devastating calamity, he added.
Upazila Water Development Board sources said that the river of Padma has risen more than four centimeters than the designated danger level.
Goalanda Upazila Parishad Chairman ABM Nurul Islam said that the affected areas have already been visited by the Parishad and necessary measures to be taken to face the natural disaster.
