700 passengers rescued

CHNADPUR: A rescue launch, ‘MV Rof Rof -2’, has saved some 700 passengers of ‘MV Sattur Khan-1’ in river Meghna as their launch was stuck on shoals early Saturday.

The passengers were moved by small boats and trawlers to the rescue launch that reached Chandpur ghat with them at noon.

One of the passengers, also Patuakhali’s former public prosecutor Mujibur Rahman Toton said that a spare launch, ‘Anchal-2’, sailed with them from Chandpur ghat around 5:00pm to their destination to Patuakhali.

Sources said that ‘MV Sattar Khan-1’ left Dhaka for Patuakhali on Friday evening and got stuck in the river in Ishanabala area in Haimchar of Chandpur at 3:30am on Saturday.

Chandpur Port Officer Mobarak Hossain said that the Sareng Master and other staff were held and the launch was seized by the law enforcers as it was sailing in a wrong route.

Haimchar thana officer-in-charge Moniruzzaman confirmed the matter to banglanews.
