Rail ride extends to 5 new areas

DHAKA: The government has decided in principle to connect five new areas with railway network to offer efficient and affordable transport service for goods and passengers, official sources said.

As planned, the five new routes are Dhaka-Maoa-Jajira-Bhanga, Kashiani-Gopalganj-Tongipara, Iswardi-Pabna-Dhalerchar, Pukuria- Bhanga, and Khulna-Mongla.

A Communications Ministry source said a project with an estimated total cost Tk 300 crore has been planned, under which the rail lines will be set up.   

Some 913 kilometres of rail tracks would be constructed and another 1402 kilometres reconstructed under the fifth annual railway project.

Director-General of Bangladesh Railways Belayet Hossain told baglnews24.com.bd, “The project is under consideration of the Planning Commission for final approval."

Works under the scheme will start within six months after getting approval, he added.  

He also said Bangladesh has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding for getting on the planned Trans Asia Railway Network.

According to the accord, Bangladesh will be connected with some 14000 kilometres of international rail routes when the trans-border Asian railway service gets on track.
