Luxury cars under surveillance

DHAKA: Luxury cars will be under surveillance as they might be used in carrying drugs, said Jahangir Hossain Matubbar, deputy-police commissioner of detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

He told media at DMP media centre at a press conference on Monday noon.

Jahangir Hossain said that people of upper stratum of society usually use luxury cars. For that reason, police usually do not check them.

Exploiting this privilege, drug smugglers use luxury cars in carrying drugs, he added.

Messages will be sent to all police units to bring these types of cars under surveillance from today on, the deputy police commissioner said.

Earlier on Sunday evening, police conducted a drive near Khidma Hospital area in Khilgaon and recovered 55 thousand pieces of yaba tablets, yaba making equipments and a luxury Pajero car.

Police also nabbed four persons including Abdullah Jubair (28), Ayub Ali (45), Shamsul Alam (24) and Mustakin Hossain alias Sunny (32).

A drug smuggler named Murad managed to escape the scene.

Jahangir Hossain, at the press conference, said that the gangs of drug peddlers usually bring yaba tablets from Teknaf to Dhaka from three to four times in a month.

They bring around 50 thousand pieces of yaba tablets in each consignment, he added.

He further said that the peddlers brought a yaba making machine from Myanmar. Collecting raw materials they were trying to produce yaba in city.

The deputy police commissioner further informed media that the ringleader Abdullah Jubair, hailed from Cox’s Bazar, passed Secondary School Certificate (SSC) at Darjeeling in India.

With this business Jubair bought two flats in a building in Niketan in city. Besides, he has also possessed huge property in Cox’s Bazar.

Police is preparing to file a case against the detainees under narcotics control act with Khilgaon Thana, he added.
