DHAKA: The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) gave permission to United Airways and Best Airlines to run their jets with expired old machineries.

The authority, which is responsible to keep the aviation industry secured, avoided the responsibilities through irregularities and corruption.

These shocking data was revealed in a preliminary investigation of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), so the corruption watchdog thinks more information of irregularities would be found after the intensive investigation.

For sake of the investigation, ACC sent a notice to the CAAB chairman, Air Vice Marshal Mahmud Husain, this week seeking necessary files and documents.

Sources concerned said, the ACC began investigation against the chairman, and several other high officials upon receiving allegations from several places.

Among the allegations, the chairman and his associates gave approval, doing irregularities, to Best Airlines to fly two Russian N-26s, though those were 30 years old.

They also gave the approval without visiting the charters violating the air navigation orders.

The chairman along with several others allegedly took financial privileges from United Airways in importing of its A-310 jet, according to complain received by the ACC.

The authority also permitted the Best Airlines to keep their charters running by using the expired machinery parts till 2011. The authority allegedly took financial privileges to give the permission, the ACC was informed.

ACC deputy-director Benjir Ahmed, who is responsible to investigate into the allegations against the United Airways, told banglanews, “As the allegations are under investigation, making any comment will not be fair for the sake of investigation; the ACC is doing its works legally.”

A high official at the ACC told banglanews that the commission has sent notices for several times asking for the necessary files and documents, which the authority indirectly denied to provide.”

Lastly, the ACC asked for the papers this week, if the CAAB don’t send it the commission will take the legal steps, added the officials.

These allegations received by the ACC were intentional and to harass the civil aviation authority, claimed Air Vice Marshal Mahmud, chairman of the CAAB.
