FROM FLOOD HIT AREA (SARAKANDI, BOGRA): At least three people were reportedly killed and another missing since the flood hit the upazila following a collapse of flood control embankment of Jamuna River there.
Rajshahi division commissioner Helal Uddin Ahmed, district deputy commissioner Shafiur Reza Bishawas, superintendent of police Mojjamel Haque, and upazila nirbahi officer Mazeda Yasmin are staying in the flood-hit areas to observe the situations into the situation.
Army was deployed at the primary level to conduct the rescue operations using some 13 boats. Water is flowing 97 centimeters up from the danger line on the river now.
The water level has continuously been increasing in the areas. People are evacuating homes with their belongings there.
District nezarat deputy collector (NDC) M Arifuzzaman told banglanews, “Reports of three people dead and one missing have been confirmed; meanwhile, high-officials of district administration visited about 25,000 houses of at least 100 villages.”
Nearly 1.25 lakhs people have been marooned in the upazila, 201 square kilometers went under flood water and 9,500 more hector corps land washed away, opined Arifuzzaman.
A total of 95 metric tomes rice and Tk 75,000 cash have been distributed at Sariakandi while 60 metrict tones rice at Dhunat upazila.
Flood hit a large part of Sariakandi since 50-60 feet of a flood control embankment of Jamuna River collapsed at Rouhadah Bazar area under Kamalpur union of the upazila early Friday, leaving thousands of people marooned.
