Ferry crisis on Mawa-Kawrakandi route

MUNSHIGANJ: The authorities have stopped plying 13 ferries on Mawa-Kawrakandi route as erosion of the Padma River destroyed around 100 feet area of a launch ghat and a newly built Ro-Ro ferry-ghat terminal-2 at Mawa on Monday night.

Transports are currently moving using Mawa Terminal-1 and Ferry Ghat-2 but they also have become risky.

Sources said only four ferries have been plying in the route from 9:00pm to keep transportation system working.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) sources said that they had stopped plying of some 13 ferries including seven dump ferries due to heavy current in the river.

We are also trying to construct the Ro Ro ferry ghat, sources added.

On the other hand, hundreds of vehicles get stuck in both sides of the river.

Sub-inspector Khandaker Khalid Hossain of Mawa River Outpost told banglanews that they have asked goods laden trucks to use alternative routes till the ferry plying gets normal here in this route.
