“Mujib imported arms-based student politics”

LONDON: This time BNP senior vice president Tarique Rahman made Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman responsible for the arms-based students’ politics of the country.

Tarique came up with this allusive allegation while addressing a discussion on the occasion of BNP’s 36th founding anniversary at Atrium Banqueting Hall in east London on Monday afternoon.

In recent days, the BNP senior leader, who is also the elder son of the party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, has been carrying out numbers of slanderous attempts on the character of Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family.

Presided over by BNP’s UK unit president Shaesta Chowdhury Kuddus, BNP international affairs secretary Muhidur Rahman, human rights affairs secretary Barrister Nasir Uddin Asim, UK unit’s former convener MA Malek and former general secretary Barrister Abdus Salam, among others, spoke at the function.

During the one and quarter-a-hour-long speech, Tarique repetitively brought malice against Bangabandhu and Sheikh Hasin to explain relevance of founding the BNP. Majority times, he gave lessons of history to the party men as usual in a bid to make Bangabandhu’s contribution substandard.

To prove the issue that Bangabandhu imported arms-based student politics, Tarique told the audiences a story of a meet between a than-Bangladesh Chhattra League (BCL) leader and Bangabnadhu. But he did mot tell name of the leader, who is now a cabinet member of incumbent government and editor of a newspaper.

Late Abdur Razzaque, who was also a senior BCL leader at that time, was also present during their meeting, Tarique claimed.

The cabinet member alleged to Bangabandhu that BCL activists were being attacked by opposition parties’ men.

Replying to the allegation, Bangabandhu, who was resting wearing lungi, told the leader, “No more allegations after getting beaten, carry out the counter-attacks.”

At time Bangabandhu brought out an object that was kept hidden under the lungi, give it to the leader’s hand and told him to use it, if necessary.  When the leader said bye and got in his vehicle, Bangabandhu asked him to keep such objects inside vehicle always.

Tarique, in his speeches, told the party men, “Object that was brought out of the lungi, what was it; I don’t need you to make it understand.”

He repeatedly termed Bangabandhu a ‘failed and illegal prime minister’ to explain the necessity of taking over the power by his father, Zaiur Rahman.

Labeling Sheikh Hasina an ‘illegal prime minister’, Tarique said, the August 21 granade attack was carried under Hasina’s concern.

Tarique, however, outlined no agenda of the party’s next course of movement.

The function began through singing the national anthem. Tarique cut a cake to mark the party’s 36th founding anniversary there.
