Judge impeachment power not to go to JS: Suranjit

DHAKA: Law, justice and parliamentary affairs standing committee chairman Suranjit Sengupta on Tuesday said the authority to impeach the judges would not go to the parliament rather the power would remain in the hand of the President.

The ruling Awami League lawmaker came up with the assertion while talking to journalists at JS Media Centre after a meeting of the JS body.

He said, “The propaganda regarding the 16th amendment of constitution is not true.”

The power of both impeachment and termination of the judges is in the hand of the President. “The parliament has nothing to do in this regard,” he said.

He further said, on termination of the judges, the Parliament will control the persons on the proof misbehaviour. A committee will be formed in this regard, he added.

Suranjit also said a law would also be formulated regarding the membership of the committee, he said adding they are ready to discuss on the formulation of the law.

According to the AL leader, people, behind the propaganda, are politically motivated.

Because, power will not go to the Parliament, he continued that the Parliament will just recommend the approval of the committee.

The power of recruitment and impeachment will remain in President’s hand, he emphasised.
