NARAYANGANJ: A local leader of the ruling party’s student arm Bangladesh Chhatra League was killed and ten other people were injured in a fighting over control of toll from sand-carrying barges in the river Dhaleswari in Munshiganj on Sunday morning.

The deceased, Mohammad Mamun, 25, son of Gedu Mia of Deobhogh Mondolpara village, was vice-president of Munshiganj town unit of Chhatra League.

BCL activists staged protest rallies in different places of the district. They also attacked and vandalized several vehicles and shops at Kachhari in the district headquarters.

Sadar police station OC Shahidul Islam told reporters that an additional police force was deployed in the town “to keep the situation under control”.

Witnesses and police sources said some of the leaseholders on behalf of Narayanga attacked a group of BCL activists while they were taking toll from the trawlers in the Dhaleswari. The clash left at least 10 people injured, they added.

Later, Mamun was rescued and rushed to Munshiganj General Hospital where duty doctors declared him dead.

The body was sent to his family home after autopsy, said police sources.
