Writ seeking veterinary surgeons

DHAKA: A writ has been filed with High Court seeking veterinary surgeons to check the physical condition of the sacrificial cattle in city markets on the occasion of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.

Advocate Monjil Morshedm on Monday, on behalf of a rights organization, filed the writ saying that the appeal has been made seeking the surgeons for checking whether any harmful substances exist in the body of the sacrificial cattle.

The writ said that the surgeons would check the cattle from October 3 to October 8.

The writ has also asked for banning the cattle which have been fattened with harmful medicine.

Besides, it has also looked for a direction in forming an expert committee to formulate a policy by seven days to ban the cattle fattening medicines.

Monjil Morshed claimed that some people are using medicines illegally brought from India and Thailand to fatten the sick animals aiming to sell them with a higher price.

He said, due to the lack of proper monitoring by the Livestock directorate and local administrative officials, a gang of farmers purchase sick animals in a lower price and fatten them by using medicines for selling in a higher rate.
