JESSORE: At least 10 children died of pneumonia and other cold related diseases in last 22-day of September at Jessore 250-bed General Hospital, hospital sources said.

Doctors, nurses and the employees at the hospital are struggling to provide services. Doctors suggest guardians to be more conscious before disease attacked their children.

When banglanews correspondent visited the hospital on Monday found that some 50 children have been admitted at A Ward, which has 28 beds; as a result 22 children are being treated putting their beds on the floor.

Everyday some 60 to 80 children are being admitted there while some are also being released from the hospital.

On-duty nurse Shanaj Khanm Milky told banglanews, a total of 1,524 children were admitted at the hospital in some 22 days of September month. Of them, 10 died.

Of the deceased, three were newborn babies and seven others were aged from one and half-a-month to 11 years, according to the hospital registry book.

Hospital’s child specialist Dr. Mahabubur Rahman said, sometimes there is a cold, sometimes there is hot; due to this type of weather, children are being attacked by pneumonia or other cold related diseases.

Hospital’ assistant registrar, also child specialist, Dr Mahfuzur Rahman said, children’s respiratory related diseases have been increased due to weather change and children aged between 2 months to 2 years have been attacked more.

To prevent these diseases, children have to be kept worn with hot dresses during the cold, if they sweated water of their bodies have to be removed, suggests Mahfuzur.

On temperature variation, M Abdul Hye, an assistant professor of Jessore Govt. M.M College, said temperature has been varying up and down as the rain decreases by the end of rainy session.

Jessore is one of the most driest region of Bangladesh, for this reason, heat is increasing due to less rain and diseases attack more due to weather.
