NOAKHALI: A man was beaten to death by a gang of local hooligans in Islamganj Bazar under Sadar upazila on Wednesday night.

The victim was identified as Nurul Amin, 40, son of late Suja Mian of Purba Durgapur of the upazila.

Witnesses said that Nurul was having tea at a shop in Islamganj Bazar. A gang of local thugs numbering 14 to 15 suddenly attacked him at about 7:30pm on the day and tried to pick up him.

People led by a former Union Parisahd member Monir Hossain, who were present on the spot, protected Amin from getting caught by the gang.

As the man set free by others, he tried to flee the scene fearing of being caught again. The gang, however, managed to catch him and gave him a severe beating in front of Kerani Bari, adjacent to Islamganj Bazar, leaving him critically injured.

Locals rescued Amin and rushed him to Noakhli Medical College and Hospital where on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Shudhram Thana Inspector (investigation) Nizam Uddin confirmed the matter to banglanews.

Police visited the crime scene and necessary action would be taken next, said the inspector.
