BAPA demands stopping more barrages on Ganga

DHAKA: Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) on Monday demanded to stop planning construction of 16 more barrages on Ganga River by India and removal of other structures from trans-boundary from all rivers.

BAPA made the demand at a press conference, organized by BAPA and Bangladesh Environment Network (BEN) at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) in the morning.

The speakers said Farakka Barrage and all other structures that were constructed on trans-boundary rivers Ganga, has to be removed to save the river’s environment in Bangladesh, West Bengal and Bihar.

They also demanded the inclusion and implementation of proposals by Bangladesh and India that will be presented in the next SAARC Summit at Katmandu of Nepal to save their own rivers, water bodies and its ecology.

BAPA general secretary Dr M Abdul Matin presented the written statement in the press conference.
