‘No barrier to transmit Bangladeshi channels in India’

DHAKA: There is no official barrier in transmitting Bangladeshi channels in India, said the country officials.

But, private Indian cable operators were unwilling to broadcast them for commercial reasons, reports the ABP Live on Sunday.

They disclosed the information following a rule by the Bangladesh High Court (HC) on the day asking authorities concerned to explain within four weeks why Indian TV channels -- Star Jalsha, Star Plus, Zee Bangla -- should not be banned in Bangladesh.

The bench comprising judges Mainul Islam Chowdhury and Mohammad Ashraful Kamal issued the rule as a lawyer, Shaheen Ara Laili, filed the writ saying the Indian TV channels were adversely affecting the Bangladeshi youths and children while naming three channels Star Jalsha, Star Plus and Zee Bangla.

Quoting newspaper reports, she alleged that three Bangladeshi children committed suicide in recent past as they could not buy for themselves a dress which was worn by a character of a serial in the Star Jalsha.

The writ also complained that no Bangladeshi TV channel is allowed to air programs in India while the Indian channels in numbers were operating in Bangladesh.
