Bangladesh wins UN Human Rights Council membership

DHAKA: Bangladesh won membership of the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council.

The country has been selected for the post for three years, said a press release signed by Khaleda Begum, senior information officer of the ministry of external affairs.

Bangladesh bagged 149 votes to become the UN human rights body’s member, the release added.

However, Bangladesh contested with India, Indonesia, Thailand and Qatar in the election held in New York on Tuesday for one of the four posts kept aside for the Asia Pacific Region.

Nevertheless, Bangladesh is walking through the path of success in different international forums one after one.

Ruling Awami League MP Saber Hossain Chowdhury has been elected president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), an international organisation of parliaments of 164 countries this week.

Earlier, parliament speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has been elected chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) last week.
