DHAKA: The Supreme Court fixed December 2 to start hearing the appeal filed by convicted war criminal Ghulam Azam, the former ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Five-member of appellate division led-by Chief Justice M Mozammel Hossain fixed the date of hearing on Wednesday.

Four other justices are -Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, Justice Abdul Wahab Mia, Justice Hasan Foyez Siddique and Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury.

The court also will hear the appeal filed by the government against the verdict and seeking a ban on Jamaat on the day.

Advocate Khandakar Mahbub Hossain moved for Ghulam Azam while Attorney General Mahbube Alam stood for the state.

On July 15 last year, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 jailed Ghulam Azam for 90 years for masterminding crimes against humanity and genocide during the Liberation War in 1971.

On August 5, Ghulam Azam appealed against the verdict seeking an overturn of his conviction and the jail sentence.

On August 12, State appealed against the verdict seeking to the apex court seeking death penalty for Ghulam Azam and a ban on the anti-liberation political party Jamaat-e-Islami.

Ghulam Azam, who was also the chief (ameer) of East Pakistan Jamaat-e-Islami during the Liberation War in 1971, was the chief of Bangladesh Jamaat between 1991 and 2000.
