DHAKA: The government is going to take an initiative to deploy ‘Dog Unit’ in country’s all international airports with a view to ensuring security after a directive to stop laborers harassment.
The unit, currently to be operated under Airport Armed Police Battalion, will later be a full-fledged ‘Dog Squad’ to provide overall security and protect smuggling.
A progress report prepared for home affairs ministry and parliamentary committee meetings made the disclosure.
Earlier on August 19, issues including drug smuggling and widespread security in country’s international airports were discussed in the fourth meeting of the committee.
The ministry progress report also mentioned the formation of ‘Dog Squad’ in protecting drug smuggling and providing security in Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and MAG Osmani International Airport in Sylhet.
However, the government earlier took the initiatives to stop harassment for outgoing laborers though they carry proper documents and genuine visas.
Police headquarters, on August 4, asked the authorities concerned, including Additional Inspector General of Police, police commissioners and 8th APBN to stop harassment of workers.
After the order, the government has been preparing for the formation of the squad in the international airports.
According to the progress report, an official order has also been made to strengthen the taskforce formed by the home ministry.
Home ministry joint-secretary Sheikh Abdul Ahad commented that the issue is under process and nothing has to be finalized yet.
