Noor Hossain Day observed

DHAKA: The nation observed the Shaheed (martyred) Noor Hossain Day commemorating the supreme sacrifice of pro- democratic activist Noor Hossain, who laid down his life to overthrow the then autocratic regime of HM Ershad.

On this day in 1987, Noor Hossain, a Juba League leader, was killed in police firing on a pro-democracy procession near Zero-point in the city.

The youth was demonstrating with his chest and back painted with slogan ‘down with autocracy’ and ‘let democracy be free’.

His death ultimately expedited the fall of Ershad regime and paved the way to restore democracy in the country.

The killing further fuelled the movement, forcing Ershad to step down on December 6, 1990.

‘Zero-Point’ in the capital’s Gulistan was renamed Noor Hossain Chattar (square) after Noor Hossain was gunned down near it in police firing.

Political parties, socio-cultural organizations, people of all walks have been observing the day ever since.

Awami League, its associate bodies and other political and socio-cultural organizations chalked out elaborate programs to mark the day.

Ruling Awami League placed floral wreaths at Shaheed Noor Hossain Square at 7:00am.

In a statement on, Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam urged all to observe the day in a befitting manner.
