Ansarullah Bangla Team member detained

DHAKA: Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) held a member of banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) from city’s Mohammadpur area on Monday night.

The accused Ahmed Wadud Jumman alias Saiful alias Arnab was detained from a house near Shershah Suri Road of the area and seized three laptops, MacGyver knife, cell phones, internet modem, computer hard disk, $2,000 cash and a good number of jihadi books.

DB held a press brief on the arrest at DMP Media Center on Minto Road in city on Tuesday noon. DMP joint commissioner (DB) Monirul Islam briefed the journalists at the event.

According to Monirul Islam, Jumman completed armed training through al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) unit recently. He then began spreading out his ideology to establish Islamic State through armed struggles in Asia.

He had dubbed the video tap of Al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri into Bangla and disseminated it in several areas.

Jumman mainly maintained communication with other jihadist outfits of the world, the DMP joint commissioner added.

He further told the media that Jumman translated different speeches, books of other languages and designed graphics works for ABT.

The militant posted speeches, writings and books related to militancy on different blogs using at least 117 separate names.

Monirul informed the journalists that Jumman worked as a teacher in computer learning at Dhanmodi Grammar School after obtaining Civil Engineering degree from Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) from Mirpur Cantonment Branch.

DB also seized from Jumman a copy of ‘Inspire’ (5th volume), the English online magazine reportedly published by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).

The arrestee also translated the magazine into Bangla, did proof checking, and sent it to the ABT’s media chief Morshed through Dawah-ilallah Forum.

Monirul said Jumman would be produced before the court sometimes on Tuesday and would be sought remands.

DB expected to get detailed information on ABT from Jumman, if court grants remand, told Monirul.

DB deputy commissioner (West) Sheikh Nazmul Alam and DMP deputy commissioner (media and public relation) Masudur Rahman were present at the brief.
