3 RU teachers killed in last decade

RAJSHAHI: With the killing of Professor Dr AKM Shafiul Islam of Sociology department of Rajshahi University, the death toll of teachers in the varsity has become three in ten years.

New names have been included in the list of killings as the previous killers could not be punished, many teachers and students in the campus opined.

Miscreants hacked professor AKM Shafiul Islam to death in front of his residence at Chadpai area adjacent to the campus on Saturday afternoon.

Earlier on December 24, 2004, members of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh killed Professor Yunus Ali of Economics department.

A court sentenced two JMB men to death and acquitted six other in the Yunus killing case on January 29, 2010.

On February 1, 2006, Professor Sheikh Taher Ahmed, 59, of Geology and Mining (GM) Department at RU had gone missing and his body was recovered from inside a septic tank in the university residential area on February 3.

A Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal speedy tribunal sentenced six people including pro-Jamaat-e-Islami teacher Mia Mohammad Mohiuddin to death in Taher murder case, acquitting two others On May 23, 2010.

The convicts appealed to the Supreme Court (SC) against the verdict. SC upheld the death sentence of two people and commuted the death penalty of two others to life imprisonment on April 21, 2013.

Meanwhile, RU authorities took all-out effort to nab the killers of Shafiul.

RU Pro Vice-chancellor Professor Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan said that they were maintaining communication to the law enforcement agencies to detain the killers.

RU Vice-chancellor (VC) Professor Muhammad Mizanuddin told banglanews that “the authorities concerned have been asked to take all necessary steps relating to Shaful’s killing.”

“The university authorities will help them with all-out effort,” added Mizanuddin.

The VC, however, admitted as the real culprits had gone unpunished, killings have been taking place one after one.
