‘Bangladesh must come out of RMG-based economy’

DHAKA: Former Minister for Economy, Competitiveness and Shipping of Greece Dr Louka T Katseli on Tuesday said it would be better for Bangladesh economy to come out of its dependency on ready made garments sector.

The Professor of Economics at the National Kapodistrian University of Athens also said ensuring employment and increasing production is necessary for the stability of economy.

She further added Bangladesh has to restructure its institutions, public-private partnership and business and internal tax sector as well as has to enact law for industry policy.

The former Director General on the Center of Planning and Economic Research (KEPE) in Athens made these observations while delivering  the CPD Anniversary Lecture 2014 on “Recent Fiscal and Labour Market Adjustment Experiences in Europe and Lessons for the Low-Income Countries” as part of CPD Special Events.

She said these steps would help initiating varieties in the economy of Bangladesh.

CPD Founder Chairman Rehman Sobhan, Fellow Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, executive director Professor Mustafizur Rahman, among others, also attended the function.
