DHAKA: Dr Ferdinand von Weyhe, the Chargé d’Affaires of the German Embassy in Dhaka, travelled to Tangail in remembrance of Monir Hossain, an arson victim who faced an unfortunate death amidst the unrest situation that prevailed in the country during last fall.
To pay homage to the suffering of Monir and his loved ones, the German Embassy has embarked on a project of improving and expanding the existing facilities of the school that the 14-year old boy used to attend.
Currently the school has almost 200 students who are being taught in 4 classrooms. The fifth classroom has been constructed by Embassy funds to reduce the number of children per class. Additional tables, chairs and proper blackboards have also been provided for the classroom, said a press release.
Moreover, the school will also be connected to the local electricity grid which will allow the installation of light bulbs as well as fans.
In addition to that the Embassy has helped to support the installation of sanitary facilities. The classroom is built in his tribute and is to be named after Monir himself.
During the inauguration ceremony Dr Weyhe emphasized “The tragic death of an innocent child has had the whole nation grieve.
With this small contribution, Germany hopes to support the people of the village by providing improved school facilities to this community. The premature death of this innocent victim due to unnecessary violence shall not be forgotten.”
On 4 November, 2013 the teenage schoolboy, Monir, was killed on a hartal day when picketers set alight the covered van in which he and his father were travelling.
