Over 200 jaywalkers fined in city

DHAKA: As a part of drive against jaywalking in the capital, the mobile court fined over 200 people at Karwanbazar and Banglamotor areas for not using foot over-bridge, zebra-crossing and underpass.

Dhaka district administration executive magistrate Sarwar Alam led the court, which realized Tk 50 to Tk 200 as fine from the jaywalkers in the area till filing this report at 11:00am.

Traffic Department of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) set up mobile courts to conduct drives on the road stretching from Ruposhi Bangla Hotel to Farmgate police box for next seven days.

DMP deputy commissioner (traffic-south) Khan Mohammad Rezwan told banglanews that leaflet distribution and mike announcement have been done requesting city dwellers to use underpasses or footbridges.

Mobile courts are conducting drives and taking legal actions against the pedestrians who are violating laws, he added.

The DMP also organized a three-day awareness-building campaign against jaywalking from Saturday before launching the mobile courts.
