CHITTAGONG: Customs officials detained a passenger of Biman Bangladesh Airlines with 14 gold bars and 70 gold chains at Shah Amanat International Airport on Tuesday morning.
The detainee was identified as M Rashid.
Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate assistant director Sushanto Paul of Customs’ Chittagong office confirmed the matter to banglanews.
Sushanto said Rashid landed at the airport by Biman BG-048 flight at 6:30am. Officials intercepted him at 7:30pm when he was crossing the green channel and recovered 14 gold bars hidden inside an eyeglass box and 70 gold chains wrapped by paper-made packets after searching.
The seized gold is weighing 2 kilograms while the bars and the chains are worth about Tk 70 lakhs and Tk 20 lakh respectively.
Legal actions would be taken against the man, Sushanto added.
