Bhutan PM pays tributes to martyrs

DHAKA: Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay paid rich tributes to the Liberation War martyrs, placing wreaths at the National Mausoleum in Savar, on outskirt of the city, Saturday morning.

All people were prohibited to visit the National Memorial on December 5-6 centering the visit of the Bhutanese premier.

Additional law enforcers were deployed in the Savar area to avert any subversive activities.

Earlier in the day, Tobgay arrived in Bangladesh on a three-day official visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

A special flight of Druk Air, carrying the Bhutanese PM and his entourage, landed in the city’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 9:00am. 

Bangladesh Premier Sheikh Hasina received her Bhutanese counterpart at the airport. He was given red-carpet reception and guard of honor by a team of three forces at the airport.

Bangladesh foreign ministry sources said a 10-member delegation including Bhutanese foreign minister and economics affairs minister accompanied the premier.

Sources concerned said during the visit, the prime ministers of Bangladesh and Bhutan will have a bilateral meeting at 3:00pm.

The two sides, in the meeting, will discuss a host of issues, including power generation, water resources management, trade, connectivity and culture, sources added.

During the tour, the Bhutanese PM will pay a courtesy call on President Abdul Hamid. He will also meet with several other senior leaders, including Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed and Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Gowher Rizvi.

The Bhutanese PM will also meet the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Raushan Ershad. He will leave Dhaka on December 8 at 3:30pm.
