Mugger caught in act, lynched in the capital

Dhaka: A young man was caught in the act while allegedly robbing people of their belongings at the crowded Gabtali Bus Terminal in the capital on Thursday morning and beaten to death in a lynch-mob reprisal.

The deceased was identified as Anawar Hossain.

A source in Darus Salam police station said supervisor of Surjyamukhi bus counter Mohammad Shajahan was returning home from his workplace. When he reached near Barobari mosque area, three muggers intercepted him and tried to snatch money from him.

“Hearing Shajahan’s shouts, local people rushed in and nabbed Anwar. Two others in the gang ran away,” says a police account of the incident.

Acting on information, police came there and rescued the seriously injured suspected mugger, Anwar, and got him admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he died at 9am. The body was taken to the DMCH morgue.

Shajahan filed a case with Darus Salam police station.
