Robber killed in Magura ‘gunfight’

MAGURA: A suspected robber was killed and three police officials were injured in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Mandartala area under Sadar upazila of the district early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Uzzal, 32.

Assistant superintendent (Magura circle) of police Sudarshan Kumar Roy told banglanews that some robbers barricaded the police van of a patrol team putting tree logs on street. When the law enforcers challenged them, the robbers opened fire at the patrol team.

In retaliation, police also fired back, triggering a gunfight. Uzzal was caught in the line of fire, leaving him injured critically, he added.

Sensing the presence of the robbers, the villages also chased them. At one stage, the gang of robbers fled the scene.

Later, police rushed Uzzal to the Magura government hospital where the attending doctors declared him dead.

During the gunfight, at least three police officials -- constable Ekramul, 35, Rafiqul, 54, Nowsher Ali, 56, -- were also injured.

They were taken to the Magura Sadar Hospital.

A case was filled in this connection, police informed.
