222 held in 9 districts

DHAKA: Law enforcing agencies detained 222 people from nine different districts across the country from Saturday evening to Sunday morning to avoid possible sabotage ahead of BNP’s Monday rally.

Most of the detainees are leaders and activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its major ally Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.

In Jessore, police detained 51 people including 8 BNP-Jamaat leaders from seven upazilas of the district from Saturday evening to Sunday morning.

The detainees will be shown arrested in different cases.

Assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Reshma Sharmin confirmed the matter to banglanews.

In Cox’s Bazar, police arrested 49 people including 20 BNP-Jamaat men across the district from Saturday late night to Sunday morning. They were warranted in the different cases.

District superintendent of police (SP) told banglanews that the BNP-Jamaat men were accessed in different cases under the speedy tribunal act with the upazilas of the district.

District additional SP Tofail Ahmed confirmed banglanews of arresting 29 other then the BNP-Jamaat men.

In Sylhet, police detained 30 leader and activists of BNP and its front originations in citywide drives from Saturday late night to Sunday noon.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police additional deputy-commissioner (media) Rahmat Ullah confirmed the matter to banglanews.

In Narayanganj, police raided the houses of BNP leaders and activists and nabbed 19 men from Saturday night to Sunday morning fearing they may carry out sabotage activities.

District Special Branch (SB) Inspector Nasiruddin confirmed the matter to banglanews.

In Rupganj of Narayanganj, police detained five BNP men on Sunday morning.

Rupganj Thana Sub-Inspector Mohsin Molla confirmed the matter to banglanews.

In Comilla, police arrested 17 activists of Islami Chhattra Shibir, student wings of Jamaat, in Chandia upazila whey the Shibir-men were holding a meeting.

Chandia Thana Officer-In-Charge (OC) Golam Morshed confirmed the matter to banglanews.

In Rajsahi, police detained 15 BNP and Jamaat-men during nightlong drive across the city including a ward unit chief of Jamaat.

Rajshahi Metropolitan Police spokesperson assistant commissioner Ifte Khayer Alam confirmed the matter to banglanews.

In Gazipur, Police nabbed 10 BNP and Jamaat-men from two upazilas – five from Tongi and Sadar each.

Tongi Thana Officer-In-Charge (OC) Ismail Hossain and Joydebpur Thana of Sadar upazila Sub-Inspector Poli Akter confirmed the matter to banglanews.

In Manikganj, police detained 13 leaders and activist s of BNP from five uazilas – four from Sadar, two from Ghor, Hariranpur each and one from Shibaloi upazila.

District Special Branch (SB) Sub-Inspector Abdul Baten confirmed the matter to banglanews.

In Chandpur, police arrested 7 BNP activists and 8 Jamaat-men sometimes between Saturday late night to Sunday morning. All were warranted in different cases.

District superintendent of police (SP) Amir Zafar confirmed the matter to banglanews.
