‘Medical universities in each division’

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Saturday announced that her government will establish medical universities in each and every division of the country aiming to ensure quality education for physicians.

The premier made the announcement while inaugurating the educational activities of country’s 11 medical colleges through a videoconference in the morning.

Of the 11 medical colleges, six government-run medical colleges are established in Tangail, Sirajganj, Manikganj, Jamalpur, Patuakhali and Rangamati while five army-run medical colleges in Dhaka, Jessore, Rangpur, Bogra and Comilla cantonments.

Hasina said that her incumbent government has been working for the development of the country so that people can live well and do not suffer from diseases. Medical service is a basic human right. It can not happen that people will die from diseases, she added.

“Number of doctors is less than that of the total number of population, so they remain under tremendous pressure. For this reason, medical universities will be established in each and every division of the country”, she hoped.

The PM asked health ministry to monitor the medical collages to ensure the quality education. To be a doctor does not mean to earn money only, rather serving human beings should be the main goal.

She said that people of the country could be free from poverty much earlier, if Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was not murdered.

Hasina further said Bangabandhu declared the independence of Bangladesh on March 26, 1971. This declaration was sent across the country through telegraph, teleprinter and other media.

Pakistani military junta arrested him for this declaration, she added.

Bangabandhu gave all directions for the Liberation War and arranged all preparations in this regard, she added.

Earlier on January 8, the premier, at a program in the city, said medical service will have to be ensured along with food security and her government is working to achieve quality medical service.
