RANGAMATI: Local administration on Saturday has imposed Section 144 in Rangamati town for an indefinite period following a series of clashes between groups of ethnic people and Bangali settlers that left over 15 injured.

Sources told banglanews that the section was imposed around 10:00am.

Earlier in the morning, the members of Pahari Chhatra Parishad, an organization of ethnic students, were locked into clashes with activists of Chhatra League, Chhatra Dal and other units of student organizations, sources added.

The clashes took place centering the opening of Rangamati Medical College and Hospital.

Confirming the matter, Rangamati acting deputy commissioner (DC) Mostafa Zaman said that the Section 144 has been imposed in Rangamati town following clashes between groups of ethnic people and Bangali settlers.

However, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the institute in the morning through a video conference.

“Earlier, Pahari Chhatra Parishad declared a down to dusk blockade for Saturday here demanding the postponement of Rangamati Medical College and Hospital’s activities,” said the DC.

“On the other hand, local units of student organizations, including Chhatra League and Chhatra Dal protested the anti-medical college movement and declared to stay on the streets that lead the two communities to be involved in clashes.”
