Bangabandhu’s Homecoming Day being marked

DHAKA: The nation is celebrating the 44th Homecoming Day of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman across the country on Saturday.

On January 10, 1972, Bangabandhu returned to Bangladesh via London and New Delhi from his captivity in Pakistan. He also took oath of office as the country's premier on that day.

Earlier on March 26, 1971, Bangabandhu declared the independence of Bangladesh and called the countrymen to join in the Liberation War spontaneously.

Soon after the deceleration of the independence, Pakistani military junta arrested Bangabandhu and then flew to West Pakistan to imprison him there.

After a nine-month blood shed war, country gained independence, defeating the Pakistani occupation forces on December 16, 1971.  Nearly a month after liberation, Bangabandhu came home on January 10, 1972 fulfilling the nation’s hopes.

Awami League (AL) and its associate bodies, other political parties and socio-cultural-professional organisations have chalked out elaborate programs to mark the historic day.

AL began the day hoisting of national and party flags atop at its central office at Bangabandhu Avenue and offices of its all units across the country at 6:30am.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid homepage to Bangabandhu placing wreaths at his portrait in Dhanmondi at 7:30am.

A rally will be held at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the city at 2:00pm on Monday. AL president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to address the function as the chief guest

National and senior leaders of AL, eminent intellectuals will also take part in the discussion.
